Preliminary Exercise 2: Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics

Preliminary Exercise 2: Roland Barthes' Theory of  Semiotics

Roland Barthes was a prominent French literary theorist and philosopher, best known for his contributions to structuralism and post-structuralism. His theory revolves around the concept of "the death of the author," which posits that a text's meaning should not be confined to the intentions or biography of its creator. Instead, Barthes argues that meaning is generated by the reader's interpretation and the cultural context in which a text exists. This shift in focus challenges traditional literary criticism, emphasizing the multiplicity of meanings that arise from the interaction between the text and its audience.

I learned that the meaning of a text should not be limited by the author's intentions or background.

Preliminary Exercise 1: Semiotics

Introduction to Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist whose work laid the foundations for modern linguistic theory. He is best known for his concepts of the linguistic sign, which consists of the signifier (the form of a word or expression) and the signified (the concept it represents). Saussure emphasized the arbitrary nature of this relationship, suggesting that there is no inherent connection between the signifier and the signified. His ideas are central to structuralism, highlighting how language functions as a system of differences rather than fixed meanings. Saussure's insights shifted the focus of linguistics from historical analysis to the study of language as a structured system, profoundly influencing various fields, including literary theory, anthropology, and semiotics.

Reflection
I learned that his theory was mainly about signs and I think I am about beginner level because i still have a lot to learn
